How to Choose the Right Work Glove

Gloves differ in pattern, material, weight, size, and application. Follow these guidelines to assist you in finding the right gloves.

First, you need to identify what you are protecting from or against your hands. Is it abrasions, scrapes, cuts, chemicals, viruses, bacteria, blood-borne pathogens, body fluids, or temperature?

Select the Appropriate Material

Cotton

  • Cotton canvas – It is lightweight and breathable for light-duty applications, and provides excellent protection against abrasion.
  • Cotton lisle – It is used for light-duty applications only, which can be used as a glove liner.

Kevlar®

It is one of the strongest man-made fibers. Kevlar is used to protect against sharp edges and heat.

Latex

  • Coated rubber – It is more cut resistant, and provides more comfort and value.
  • Disposable latex – This thinner version protects the product from contamination or the person from the product.
  • Unsupported latex – This thicker version is liquid proof and chemical resistant.

Leather

  • Cowhide – It is most commonly used because of its good abrasion resistance property and attractive appearance. Cowhide is warmer then pigskin and goatskin. This type of leather is the most heat resistant.
  • Deerskin – It is the warmest of the leathers and durable. Deerskin has the highest tensile strength, excellent dexterity, and softness.
  • Goatskin – Because of the high lanolin content, the leather is soft. Goatskin is waterproof and abrasion resistant.
  • Pigskin – It is the most economical choice of the leathers. Pigskin offers the best abrasion resistance and breathability. The leather remains soft after repeated use, and even after being laundered.
  • Synthetic leather – It is used for basic protection against abrasion.

Neoprene

This synthetic rubber material provides excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals.

Nitrile

  • Coated nitrile – Has excellent grip and machine washable.
  • Disposable nitrile – Resistant to snags, punctures, abrasions, and cuts.
  • Unsupported nitrile – Strong against puncture and chemicals.

Nylon

It is low in lint, which helps protect the product from finger prints and contamination.

Polyethylene (PE)

Plastic is economical for a variety of uses.

Polyurethane (PU)

This material is resistant to oils, solvents, greases, gasoline, etc.

Vinyl (PVC)

  • Coated vinyl – An inexpensive choice for cut and abrasion resistance.
  • Disposable vinyl – An economical choice, plus it is chemical resistant.
  • Rough PVC coated – Allows handling on wet surface easier and safer.

Wool

This material provides excellent insulation.

How to Determine Your Glove Size

Wrap a measuring tape around your palm excluding your thumb, this number will determine the size of the glove you need. The table below gives you a general idea of what size glove you may need, but the best way to make sure the glove fits would be to ask for samples from your supplier.

Designed for a roomy fit, clute cut is best for cloth and lightweight gloves.

This is the most comfortable style. There is a horizontal seam in palm directly below center two fingers.

Gloves fit either hand and can be turned over when palm is worn out.
